Description:  This and the following volumes of “Lute Songs for Recorders & Viol” include transcriptions of English Renaissance lute songs reformatted from the original lute and solo voice into a four-staff format.  These are not arrangements, but an attempt to preserve the original music but in a different format.  In each of these presentations the vocal line naturally creates the top line of this four-part format.  The accompanying three staves come directly from the lute part which is, for virtually all lute songs, in three contrapuntal lines.  This conveniently forms the lower three lines of a four-part texture.  Included in these volumes are as many of the solo-voice lute songs by as many English composers as I have managed to find.  The first volume includes four or five lute songs by each of these composers and the later volumes gradually included the lute songs by only the more prolific composers.  The last volume only includes songs by Thomas Campion, perhaps the most prolific of these composers.  

Each volume is in two different versions.  For instance, Vol. 1a uses clefs that are more recorder-friendly, while Viol. 1b includes the same lute songs, but uses clefs that are more viol-friendly.

Description:  This is a continuation of the Fantasias a4.  Like the first three, this fantasia is somewhat in the traditions of the fantasias from the late English Renaissance.  The contrapuntal motion is similar, but the harmonies often move in a more modernistic direction, but are not (at least to the ear of the composer) anywhere near atonal.
